HISTORY OF THE GORGE

The Tennessee River Gorge, also known as the TN Grand Canyon, has the most breathtaking views that Chattanooga has to offer. The historic TN River Gorge is 27 miles long and is the fourth largest River Canyon east of the Mississippi River. Additionally, it is the only gorge next to a mid-size city as large as Chattanooga. Before TVA came along and constructed dams, the River Gorge was a treacherous journey for anyone traveling by water. The TN River Gorge Trust owns 17,000 of the 27,000 acres of the gorge. Their goal is to preserve and protect the area. Moreover, it is home to many unique habitats for animals and plant species. Along the river, you can see Bald Eagles, Osprey, Blue Herons, and many more animal species. There are known to be around 1,000 plant, 180 bird, and 60 mammal species.
